Increased Incidence of Wildland Fire

Webinar Date
Wednesday, 1/17/2024, 10:30 – 11:30am EST

Rooted in Research Webinar Series:Adapting to Extreme Weather “Wild Cards”

Wildfires naturally occur in many ecosystems, but the incidence and intensity of wildfires has been increasing in areas where fire is not known to often occur. Northern Research Station scientist Nicholas Skowronski will discuss the history of large, unexpected wildfires, explore research that can help address these fires, and discuss the connection between climate uncertainty and wildfire. This talk will be followed by an in-depth overview of the Greenwood Fire that occurred in Minnesota in August 2021, in which Steven Miller, the regional director for fire and aviation within the USDA Forest Service Eastern Region, who served as the Deputy Incident Commander, will cover the unlikely occurrences that contributed to this fire and management implications for future fires.
