Ecological and Physical Description
This RNA is notable for its old-growth northern hardwood forest and sensitive herbaceous species, including broad-leaved spring beauty (Claytonia caroliniana) and white baneberry (Actaea pachypoda). Hardwood species include, sugar maple (Acer saccharum), yellow birch (Betula alleghaniensis) and basswood (Tilia americana).
Average annual precipitation is 29.09 inches (73.88), with 11.22 inches (28.5 cm) falling in summer. Average annual snowfall is 41.7 inches (105.9 cm).
The closest station is in Two Harbors, MN, which is located 18 air miles (29 km) south of the RNA.
The RNA is within the Highland Moraine. Soils are sandy over sandy, well drained, light colored soils.
