Incident Command Tool for Protecting Drinking Water (ICWater) v. 3

Release Date
ICWater logo

Description

This GIS tool provides incident commanders and other first responders with realtime information about risks to drinking water resulting from a toxic spill into any surface water in the United States. The software enables realtime analysis of projected arrival time and contaminant concentration at all surface drinking water intakes in the country. Users can also project effects from the deposition of toxic materials from airborne plumes as well as tidal influence on riverflows in coastal areas.

It was developed by an interagency team led by the USDA Forest Service and is now operated and maintained by the Defense Threat Reduction Agency.

For an account of emergency responders using ICWater in a major toxic spill see Modeling the Fate and Transport of a Chemical Spill in the Elk River, West Virginia, published in a 2015 issue of the Journal of Environmental Engineering.
