PNW-FIA Hawai'i Inventory Database

The Pacific Northwest unit of the Forest Inventory and Analysis Program (PNW-FIA) conducts resource inventories for the Hawaiian islands. Data from these inventories are provided in an SQLite database. SQLite is a widely used, public domain relational database management system. SQLite databases can be opened, queried and edited using programs such as DB Browser for SQLite (link is external; disclaimer). 

Overview

The Hawaiian islands database combines data from the corresponding national FIA database with many other regional data columns and tables exclusive to PNW-FIA. The database contains understory vegetation data (including invasive species), Pacific Island priority tree damage and forest disturbance data (e.g. wild pig damage), and more.

Status 

This database contains data from the first and second Hawai'i forest inventories completed between 2010-2015 and 2019-2022 and was initially published in September 2022. It was updated in December 2024 to include Growth, Removal and Mortality (GRM) data and implement an update to the way carbon values are calculated. The current December 2025 version includes minor changes to reserved area codes for 16 plots.

Current data summaries for each state and related published reports using these inventory data can be found on our State Stats page. Data for all states and territories in the U.S., including the PNW region, can also be accessed on the national FIA Data and Tools website. Raw data are available via the FIA Data Mart and table generator tools such as EVALIDator provide a user-friendly interface for producing quick, customizable data summaries. The national FIADB User Guide provides comprehensive information on all fields in the database and is a good place to start when using the data.
