PNW-FIA Pacific Islands Database

The Pacific Northwest unit of the Forest Inventory and Analysis Program (PNW-FIA) conducts resource inventories for the U.S. affiliated Pacific Islands of American Samoa, Guam, the Republic of Palau, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, and the Republic of the Marshall Islands. Data from these inventories are available in two formats: an SQLite database and a set of comma delimited text files. 

SQLite is a widely used, public domain relational database management system. Please see the SQLite home page (link is external; disclaimer) for more information. SQLite databases can be opened, queried and edited using programs such as DB Browser for SQLite (link is external; disclaimer). 

The Comma-Separated Values (CSV) text files contain all the underlying inventory data with separate text files for each database table. 

Note: In previous years, the PNW FIA program provided a Microsoft Access version of the databases in addition to the SQLite format. In 2023, the decision was made to discontinue the Access version due to challenges in developing and maintaining it. If Microsoft Access is needed, use the External Data tab within Access to create an ODBC database connection to import or link SQLite tables to an Access database. 

Overview

The Pacific Islands database combines data from the corresponding national FIA databases with many other regional data columns and tables exclusive to PNW-FIA. The database contains understory vegetation data (including invasive species), Pacific Island priority tree damage and forest disturbance data (e.g. wild pig damage), and more.

Status

The Pacific Islands databases contain inventory data gathered on visits in the following years:

• American Samoa in 2001, 2012, and 2022
• Guam in 2002, 2013, and 2023
• Palau in 2003 and 2014
• The Northern Mariana Islands in 2004 and 2015
• The Federated States of Micronesia in 2005 and 2016
• The Marshall Islands in 2008 and 2018.

Raw data are available via the FIA Data Mart and table generator tools such as EVALIDator provide a user-friendly interface for producing quick, customizable data summaries.
