Water Supply Stress Index (WaSSI) Dashboard
Water yield under future climate conditions
Water supply is an important ecosystem service, one that is likely to change with future climatic conditions. The Water Supply Stress Index (WaSSI) model is a tool that can be used to simulate the effects of climate, land use, land cover, and water use on water availability. We used WaSSI to simulate annual water yield for more than 2000 subbasins (USGS HUC8) in the conterminous United States under multiple future climate scenarios and associated vegetation dynamics (Duarte et al., 2024). We used climate outputs from 16 general circulation models (GCMs) under high and low warming scenarios (Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs) 8.5 and 4.5, respectively) and associated vegetation dynamics simulated with the MC2 dynamic global vegetation model as inputs. The interactive dashboard on this web page allows you to explore the water yield projections across time and space.
The dashboard allows you to view the 2008 through 2099 water yield data for a single HUC8 subbasin in a line chart. Instructions for using the dashboard are below:
- Select from the map: Using your mouse, navigate to a HUC8 and left click to select the HUC8 to display the corresponding data in the line chart. The name of the selected HUC9 will appear below the search bar in the list panel. To switch to list selection, click the “X” button at the top left of the map.
- Select from the list: In the list panel, you can scroll through the list of HUC8 names and codes and left click to make a selection. When a selection is made, the line chart populates with the HUC8 data and the map zooms to the extent of the HUC8. You can type text or numbers in the search box and the list will be filtered based on your inputs. To clear the search box, click the “X” button next to the search box and the full list will be restored.
