Wood Products for Cultural Use

The Wood Products for Culture and Heritage project gathered Alaska Native youth in 2019 and 2020 to learn from communities, study traditional arts and crafts, and conduct a cedar seedling growth experiment to better understand and sustain cultural wood product needs in Alaska. Study participants, selected by youth and project partners, had conversations about significance of, and access to, trees used for carving and weaving. This story map below and the 2021 article “Wood Products for Cultural Use,” published in the journal Forests, highlight the key community science findings. The project will continue in the summer of 2021.
