Primary Features

Charles Grier Johnson Jr. proposed Research Natural Area (pRNA) was selected to represent two plant communities—aspen (Populus) in a spruce bottom and tufted hairgrass (Deschampsia caespitosa) meadow. The topography is relatively flat, sloping gently down to the North Fork John Day River. There is a perennial stream that flows into the North Fork John Day River with two additional intermittent streams feeding into the pRNA. Aspen in the wet bottom is surrounded by subalpine fir (Abies lasiocarpa) and spruce (Picea) forest. The adjacent meadow is an isolated Blue Mountain tufted hairgrass-sedge (Abildgaardia) community.
