Primary Features

Chiwaukum Creek proposed Research Natural Area (pRNA) was chosen to represent Grand fir (Abies grandis) mixed old growth conifer/shrub community types.  The topography on north and south facing slopes is very rocky. The slopes toward the top of the ridges are dominated by rock outcrops and very patchy vegetative cover. The pRNA includes forests of ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa), Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga), and grand fir, with grand fir regenerating in the understory. The grand fir community types alternate between vine maple (Acer circinatum) and paxistima (Paxistima myrsinites).
