Cummins-Gwynne Creek

Cummins-Gwynn Creek Research Natural Area (RNA) was established to represent western hemlock/sword fern forest (Tsuga heterophylla/Polystichum munitum) and the accompanying coastal stream system.   Both Cummins and Gwynn Creeks are completely contained within the RNA. Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis) forests dominate the western portion of the RNA while Douglas fir (Pseudotsugamenziesii) and western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla) forests dominate the eastern portion. Red alder (Alnus rubra) dominates the riparian zones of major drainage.  Swordfern, salmonberry (Rubus spectabilis), and salal (Gaultheria shallon) are the major shrubs found in both forest series. Trees in this RNA have some of the most rapid growth rates found in North America.
