Lemmingsworth Gulch Research Natural Area (RNA) was established to represent a high concentration of endemic and rare plant species. The topography of the RNA includes steeply folded pre-Tertiary rocks, deeply dissected terrain, and a broad peneplain. The RNA also includes an entire watershed with north and south facing slopes. The variety of geologic substrates, elevation range, and topographic diversity create a highly diverse flora. Seven plant associations are in the Dothan formation including: Tanoak (Lithocarpus)/Salal (Gaultheria shallon), Tanoak Pacific Rhododendron (Rhododendron macrophyllum) Evergreen Huckleberry (Vaccinium ovatum), Tanoak /Canyon Live Oak (Quercus chrysolepis), Tanoak/ California Myrtle (Myrica californica), Tanoak/Evergreen Huckleberry /Salal, Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga) /Tanoak /Canyon Live Oak, and Tanoak/Evergreen Huckleberry. Three plant associations are in the Peridotite formation: Tanoak/California Coffeeberry (Rhamnus californica), Jeffrey Pine (Pinus jeffreyi)/Western White Pine (Pinus monticola), and Jeffrey Pine /Huckleberry Oak (Quercus vacciniifolia).
