National Woodland Owner Survey Dashboard
An estimated 691 million acres of forestland span the United States (not including Interior Alaska), and most of this land is privately owned. Approximately 37 percent of the forestland is owned by families and individuals, 29 percent by the federal government, 22 percent by corporations, 7 percent by state governments, 2 percent by local governments, and 2 percent by Tribal groups.
The National Woodland Owner Survey is conducted by the Forest Inventory and Analysis program. It is the official survey of private forest owners in the United States. The summary results help land managers, extension foresters, policymakers, researchers, nonprofit organizations, and other professionals make informed decisions about services and policies that impact private landowners.
About this dashboard
The National Woodland Owner Survey dashboard generates plots and tables from survey results. Users can explore ownership characteristics, management activities, program participation and awareness, and other summary results. Use the controls to select a variable (survey question), year (2023, 2018, or 2013), geography (national, regional, or state), domain (minimum size of forest holding), units (acres or ownerships), and type of summary statistic (percent or number). Find each variable's corresponding survey question in the Key to Dashboard Variables.
