Predicting Fire Severity in Northern California

Webinar Date
Wednesday, 7/26/2023, 11 – 11:45am PDT

The intent of the presentation is to present the status of our fire severity mapping project in California.

In this presentation Dr. Drury will discuss:

  • Drivers of fire severity
  • Fire Severity Maps
  • Historic and potential uses of fire severity maps
  • How to obtain the most current fire severity maps

Dr. Stacy Drury is a fire ecologist and modeler who has spent the last 30-odd years studying fire across the Americas in a variety of ecosystems, including Alaska, the Pacific Northwest, Arizona, Mexico and Brazil. Since joining PSW, he has focused on understanding the drivers of fire severity in Northern California and how to use those drivers to predict, or forecast, fire severity potentials across landscapes. Stacy’s other projects include evaluating fuel consumption models on prescribed fires in the Sierras, evaluating flammability of urban vegetation, monitoring post-fire vegetation succession, mapping the likelihood post-fire seedling success in California, Washington, and Oregon, establishing reference conditions in the Mendocino National Forest using historic aerial photos, and modeling fire potentials in Southern California to evaluate the likelihood of wildfire caused trail.
