Assessing riparian and groundwater-dependent ecosystems in the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest

Riparian and groundwater-dependent ecosystems (GDEs) in the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest provide critical ecosystem services but are threatened by multiple interacting stressors. We found that riparian areas cover small percentages of Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest valley bottoms—they are most abundant in the Northern Mountains, Ruby Mountains, and Sierra Nevada, and are least abundant in the Central and Eastern Mountains, as well as the Spring Mountain National Recreation Area. Nevertheless, these rare ecosystems play an outsized role in maintaining biodiversity and protecting the volume and quality of water that benefits downstream users and ecosystems throughout Nevada and neighboring states. Many key ecosystem characteristics of riparian areas were moderately altered. Common stressors included grazing, roads, dams, diversions, and recreation. More work is needed to understand the current and historical status of beaver populations. Additionally, spatially, and temporally consistent surveys of woody riparian corridors and groundwater-dependent ecosystems would improve future assessments.
These findings are important for land managers responsible for maintaining riparian ecosystems. Ensuring the long-term sustainability of riparian areas and groundwater-dependent ecosystems requires informed decision-making based on science-driven assessments. By identifying areas of concern and potential management actions, this work helps guide efforts to protect and restore essential ecosystems for both ecological and human benefits.
