Using Fire Risk Mapping and TreeMap to Estimate the Impacts of Fuel Treatments on Carbon, Smoke Emissions, and Fire Severity

Recent decades of research at the Missoula Fire Sciences Lab have produced a set of models and datasets that can be leveraged to produce high-resolution continental maps of components for fire risk (including burn probability and fire intensity) and detailed models of vegetation (including tree-level detail for forests and fuel loading for both forests and rangelands). Combining these two datasets provides a rich scientific playground that we are still exploring: so far it has yielded datasets on carbon risk, smoke emissions, and expected fire severity.

From Maps to Management: Using ForSys to Navigate Land Management Tradeoffs

Prioritizing and planning investments in restoration and wildfire risk reduction is a complex challenge for land managers. The ForSys Spatial Planning System leverages today’s wealth of spatial data into spatially explicit prioritization strategies paired with potential outcomes and decision tradeoffs. ForSys provides actionable information for managers allowing them to make and communicate management decisions clearly and transparently.
