Fire Science You Can Use: Tools for Pre-Fire Planning and Fuels Treatments

New Fuels Data and Fire Models for Prescribed Fire

Presented by Russ Parsons, Research Ecologist

This presentation seeks to introduce prescribed burn practitioners, burn bosses, and fuel managers to new data and tools that are more specifically targeted for prescribed burn planning and implementation. These tools include FastFuels, a 3D fuel mapping and modeling platform; DripTorch, a spatiotemporal ignition planning tool; and QUIC-Fire, a 3D fire model for prescribed burns. In addition, Russ presents two integrative platforms that include all of those three things: BurnPro3D, a browser-based platform, and the QUIC-Fire GUI tool, a desktop tool. In the development of these components, we seek to expand the toolbox available to managers and empower them to burn more acres, achieve their management goals, and ensure the safety of their crews and surrounding communities. This growing toolbox of new tools is currently being tested with managers in several locations across the country.

From Research to Operations: The Interagency Fuel Treatment Decision Support System (IFTDSS)

Presented by Wendy Detwiler, Fire Management Specialist

The Interagency Fuel Treatment Decision Support System (IFTDSS) is a web-based application designed to make fuel treatment planning and analysis more efficient and effective. This presentation will explain what IFTDSS is, where the science behind it came from, and how the IFTDSS Team at the interagency Wildland Fire Management Research, Development, and Application (WFM RDA) program has created IFTDSS to bring that science to the field.
