Productive Forests and Rangelands: Timber Outputs, Valuation, and Supply Chains

Webinar Date
Wednesday, 2/4/2026, 11am – 12pm MST

This was the final of four webinars in our series focused on science supporting Productive Forests and Rangelands. During this webinar, scientists from the Rocky Mountain Research Station presented their latest research in three short presentations.

An Overview of the Timber Products Output Program from Forest Inventory and Analysis

Presented by Kristen Pelz, Analysis Team Leader, Forest Inventory and Analysis and Michael Wilson, Program Manager, Forest Inventory and Analysis

A central component of Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) is the National Resource Use Monitoring (NRUM) program, which includes the Timber Products Output program. FIA and our partners gather and synthesize information from logging activities about product removals and harvest residues, and survey active primary wood processing mills on location of mill, volume received by roundwood product, species, and geographic origin, and mill residue by-products and uses. This webinar provides an introduction to the Timber Products Output program and how it contributes to our understanding of the forest products industry of the United States.

Engineering Advanced Supply Chains for Difficult Markets

Presented by Nate Anderson, Research Forester

This presentation discusses forest product supply chains tied to fuels treatments and other forest restoration activities that generate timber and biomass removals with potential economic value. Nate shares about efforts to develop new engineering models and tools for supply chain management that will help improve efficiency and maximize potential benefits to forest health, community safety, and industry growth.

Timber Supply Dynamics on High-Risk Landscapes

Presented by Jesse Henderson, Research Economist

This presentation is about supply and demand for timber. Jesse discusses how increases in timber harvests in high-risk landscapes interact with growth and mortality to provide short term projections of prices. He also considers the impacts of mill capacity.
