Research advances on specialized trees and biochar to remediate and stabilize mining waste with the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community

In this webinar, Dr. Zalesny discussed the advances of his research work with biochar and highly specialized trees to restore polluted environments in the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community. He highlighted the main concepts related to the pollution with heavy metals, the importance of this site for the Community, the importance of phyto-remediation and the recurrent tree selection process, the characteristics of the trees utilized in the research work, the ecological benefits of his work and biochar, including its role in enhancing soil health and reducing pollution. The presentation concluded with a summary of the main results achieved during the first growing cycle of the trees after the initial establishment.
