00;00;03;24 - 00;00;05;05 almost 40% 00;00;05;05 - 00;00;09;02 of the vertebrates that live on land in the contiguous United States 00;00;09;09 - 00;00;13;15 that we consider to be threatened with extinction, have been found 00;00;13;15 - 00;00;14;26 to be sensitive to drought. 00;00;14;26 - 00;00;16;29 So it's very important in the sense 00;00;16;29 - 00;00;21;02 that now we have a good idea of which of these species might, 00;00;21;14 - 00;00;25;09 be exposed to the largest increases in drought in the future. 00;00;25;29 - 00;00;28;29 the genesis of this was probably a big, 00;00;29;00 - 00;00;32;00 historic drought in California in 2012 or 2016. 00;00;32;01 - 00;00;35;08 And that's really where I started, 00;00;35;20 - 00;00;38;20 you know, getting involved in drought research with respect to wildlife. 00;00;39;02 - 00;00;43;19 And, the state of California also was it was kind of a wake up call for them. 00;00;44;13 - 00;00;45;29 for many species, 00;00;45;29 - 00;00;49;03 we don't really know whether they are sensitive to drought or not. 00;00;49;14 - 00;00;54;29 And so we mapped where, areas of high biodiversity overlap 00;00;55;09 - 00;00;58;21 with, large predicted increases in drought. 00;00;59;07 - 00;01;05;05 So we may consider these regions to be priorities if we're going to try to, 00;01;05;05 - 00;01;10;23 figure out what species may be vulnerable, to drought and to what extent. 00;01;11;27 - 00;01;12;20 one thing that's 00;01;12;20 - 00;01;16;08 important to know in this we look at the average per ecoregion. 00;01;16;16 - 00;01;19;24 there's almost 90 of them across the contiguous USA. 00;01;19;29 - 00;01;23;15 There might be quite a bit of variability within these ecoregions. 00;01;24;10 - 00;01;27;26 there's also the the variability across potential futures. 00;01;27;26 - 00;01;31;27 So we don't know exactly what's going to happen by the end of next century. 00;01;32;06 - 00;01;34;06 this was a really high level analysis. 00;01;34;06 - 00;01;37;13 So it's looking at pretty much all resident 00;01;37;13 - 00;01;41;00 vertebrates across the United States how this can really benefit conservation 00;01;41;00 - 00;01;45;01 planning is to highlight where we think drought is, 00;01;45;01 - 00;01;49;02 is increasing the most, where we need to focus our, 00;01;49;10 - 00;01;52;27 planning efforts and conservation efforts on this specific threat. 00;01;53;10 - 00;01;57;14 it's important for this type of work to, inform managers and planners 00;01;57;23 - 00;02;00;24 so they can focus on, okay, this part of the country or 00;02;00;24 - 00;02;04;15 these group of species are likely to be most exposed to increased drought. 00;02;04;15 - 00;02;06;07 So we can start thinking forward about what 00;02;06;07 - 00;02;10;22 sort of mitigation actions, we should be taking or planning for. 00;02;12;14 - 00;02;12;27 we saw 00;02;12;27 - 00;02;16;01 that the southwest, which in general is already 00;02;16;01 - 00;02;20;22 a pretty dry region, will see the largest increases in drought. 00;02;21;07 - 00;02;24;27 While it also has the highest diversity in vertebrates. 00;02;25;09 - 00;02;29;00 this points towards something interesting, which is that 00;02;29;05 - 00;02;33;17 the place with most diversity will also be hit the hardest. 00;02;33;26 - 00;02;38;21 also, when we looked at, the relatively few species for which we currently know 00;02;38;21 - 00;02;42;28 whether they're drought sensitive or not, many of those occur in the southwest. 00;02;43;28 - 00;02;46;28 So it does point towards there also being 00;02;46;28 - 00;02;49;28 sensitivity of local wildlife to drought, 00;02;49;29 - 00;02;52;28 because drought is relatively common in these regions, 00;02;52;28 - 00;02;56;04 it may also be that we have just more knowledge on 00;02;56;04 - 00;03;00;21 how the species respond to drought compared to, say, an area 00;03;00;21 - 00;03;05;22 in the northeastern USA where drought has been relatively uncommon. 00;03;05;22 - 00;03;07;14 There may also be species 00;03;07;14 - 00;03;10;11 sensitive to drought, but we just don't know at this point, 00;03;10;11 - 00;03;14;26 because droughts may not have occurred within that species range very often. Yet. 00;03;15;26 - 00;03;17;04 the different management strategies, 00;03;17;04 - 00;03;19;27 I think, again, are going to have to come back to the 00;03;19;27 - 00;03;22;27 the life histories of the species that we're particularly concerned about. 00;03;22;27 - 00;03;25;14 So if it's those species that are directly impacted 00;03;25;14 - 00;03;29;07 by the availability of water in streams and rivers that takes certain 00;03;29;11 - 00;03;32;10 types of responses that managers can do. 00;03;33;01 - 00;03;35;23 some of the work that we've done in the past has looked at the response 00;03;35;23 - 00;03;39;01 of some mature associated species like the spotted owl, Pacific 00;03;39;01 - 00;03;42;01 fisher, to loss in, forest. 00;03;42;15 - 00;03;45;27 during that period, also associated with some pretty large wildfires, 00;03;45;27 - 00;03;49;13 we saw a loss of mature forest habitat in those areas, 00;03;49;21 - 00;03;52;13 which can really affect some of these species dependent on those habitats. 00;03;52;13 - 00;03;55;21 Those two species are not necessarily considered drought sensitive, 00;03;55;27 - 00;03;58;25 but if their habitats are going to go through large changes, 00;03;58;25 - 00;04;02;23 then that, indicates a different type of habitat management, 00;04;02;23 - 00;04;05;26 different actions that we need to take to mitigate drought effects.
