For example, a team of SRS researchers has been evaluating climate change variability, the different ways climate impacts might affect ecosystems on different spatial or temporal scales. They used this information to assess threats to forest ecosystems. This research has been used for various projects, but in Future Forests, the researchers contributed a chapter on climate downscaling for wildfire management.

Across the book's fourteen chapters, many led or contributed to by SRS researchers, authors detail topics such as adaptation and mitigation strategies for forests, nutrient limitations, and tipping points.
