Incredible but true tales of Appalachian forest fire from the last 250 years: Lessons for our future?

USDA Forest Service scientist Steve Norman will discuss historical and ecological fire narratives of places around us to address pressing questions related to fire of our day. He will touch on local fire history, such as in the Asheville watershed, Linville Gorge, Great Smoky Mountains, Graveyard Fields and the Pisgah and Nantahala National Forests. He will also share insights about how our landscape burned in the past to make better sense of how and why it is now burning. 

Norman is a research ecologist with the Southern Research Station. He mostly works at the landscape scale to improve how we monitor forest health with remote sensing. Since the early-1990s, his passion has been to understand forest and fire history at scale; that is, how it relates to vegetation, cultures, and climate variability. He has worked across North America from the forests of Pennsylvania, Illinois, Costa Rica, and California to the southern Appalachians where he has lived since 2007.
