High infiltration rates and deep soil water storage in forested watersheds buffer the impacts of heavy rainfall on streamflow (or discharge). The graph above shows that stream discharge from the urban watershed has much higher flows during storms than the forested watershed, primarily due to higher levels of impervious surfaces such as streets, rooftops, and parking lots.
