Center for Aquatic Technology Transfer (CATT) Fiscal Year 2023 Report

Abstract

We had a productive fiscal year 2023, completing work on 16 field projects across 7 national forests and continuing support of several Southern Research Station projects. We deployed our field teams to areas as far away as Puerto Rico, Alabama, and Kentucky while tackling projects from stream fish and habitat monitoring to outreach and education. We provided our partners with information and resources they need to maintain or restore healthy watersheds, prioritize infrastructure improvement projects, connect people to the outdoors, and deliver high quality science.

Fiscal year 2023 marked notable changes in staff. We began the year by working with our partners at Virginia Tech to bring on several new staff to rebuild the CATT field team. Our partnership with Virginia Tech also began the collaborative support of a graduate student who will analyze a portion of the long-term data that Dr. Dolloff and the CATT have collected over the past 30 years.

In December we wished Dr. Andy Dolloff a happy retirement from the Forest Service. Andy co-founded the CATT in 1995 in response to the growing need for research technologies to be applied directly to management challenges. Andy’s enthusiastic dedication over the years to develop, promote, and manage the CATT is appreciated by countless Forest Service personnel across the country and the hundreds of field technicians the CATT program has mentored over the years. For many of them, their time with the CATT is what propelled them into a lifelong science career. It is with much gratitude that we express our thanks to all that Andy did during his extensive USFS career in fisheries science.

As always, we are grateful for the many partners that contributed to the CATT mission in Fiscal Year 2023. We look forward to working with you again in Fiscal Year 2024!
