Nanocellulose Material for Infrastructure Projects

What is so small (nanocellular) but could improve strength and durability over traditional cement? Nanocellulose material.

Nanocrystals from wood, which are smaller than microscopic but larger than an atom, are moving from the laboratory to the real world in structures such as bridges, sidewalks, and other transportation infrastructure. Nanocellulose is a byproduct of the paper, bioenergy, agriculture, and pulp industries.

Researchers at the U.S. Forest Service are at the forefront of developing low-carbon concrete options that enhance performance. Cellulose nanocrystals can chemically react to strengthen concrete while using less water, making the process more sustainable and efficient.
