Cycle of production and function of biochar composite boards.

Biochar, a form of charcoal made from burning woody biomass without oxygen, shows promise for cleaning wastewater and stormwater due to its ability to absorb contaminants. However, biochar’s powder-like form complicates handling and limits practical use in remediation. Forest Products Laboratory scientists have developed innovative biochar-based composite panels by combining biochar with natural binders, which can be modified to target specific contaminants. These biochar composite panels make it easier and more feasible to remove pollutants from water and have shown strong adsorption of multiple heavy metals, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), and other contaminants.

Join this webinar to learn more about biochar composite panels and their uses directly from Forest Products Laboratory scientists Zhiyong Cai and Jeremy (Qiangu) Yan.
