Developing Biochar with Desired Properties for Application Demonstration of Abandoned Mine-land Reclamation at Commercial Scale

Researchers are developing new solutions for environments contaminated with lead, a persistent and toxic heavy metal. Alkaline biochar, which is pre-treated with sodium hydroxide (NaOH), absorbs more lead from liquid solutions compared to non-alkaline biochar. This work highlights the potential of biochar pre-treated with NaOH as a new solution to a critical environmental and public health challenge.
Expected Results
A paper, Alkaline Biochar for Highly Effective Lead Removal, will be submitted summer of 2024 for review.
