Utilizing small diameter trees for mass timber production: Economic, environmental, and supply chain network assessment
This study aims to assess the feasibility of new mass timber markets for low-value small diameter logs to be generated from planned fuel treatment and ecosystem restoration activities in the Wildfire Crisis Strategy (WCS) landscapes.
Expected Results
- Help identify a process to convert small diameter logs to mass timber panels.
- Compare and contrast the economic viability and life-cycle environmental impacts of low-diameter mass timber panels with conventional processes.
- Identify optimal locations to establish low-diameter log mass timber manufacturing facilities within the Wildfire Crisis Strategy landscapes.
