Stewardship Mapping and Assessment Project - National Map (STEW-MAP National Map) is an innovative interactive tool designed to map the office locations of nonprofit organizations engaged in community stewardship across the United States and its territories. By combining publicly available IRS 990 data and survey results from the U.S. Forest Service's Stewardship Mapping & Assessment Project (STEW-MAP), this tool provides a dynamic view of some of the civic efforts shaping our communities.
Why a National Map?
Civic stewardship—caring for our shared spaces—is vital for thriving communities and ecosystems. The STEW-MAP National Map builds on the U.S. Forest Service’s long standing research framework, STEW-MAP, which asks: Who takes care of their community?
Traditional STEW-MAP surveys provide detailed snapshots of stewardship activities in specific regions at specific times. The National Map expands this work by visualizing data from IRS records alongside survey results, offering a broader and evolving picture of stewardship organizations across the country.
What Can You Do with the STEW-MAP National Map?
The STEW-MAP National Map is not just a map—it's a resource for exploration, discovery, and collaboration. Here’s how you can interact with the tool:
- Explore Stewardship Organizations: Browse over 129,000 mapped nonprofit office locations, complete with details such as organization names, focus areas, addresses, and websites.
- Update and Add Data: Suggest edits to existing records or create new entries for organizations not currently included on the map. Your contributions will be reviewed by the STEW-MAP Live team for inclusion in future updates.
- Visualize and Analyze Data: Use the tool to better understand the distribution of civic stewardship across regions, helping researchers, planners, and community members alike to identify and connect with new and potential partners.
Data Sources and Features
The STEW-MAP National Map dataset is a blend of two major sources:
- IRS 990 Data: Publicly available data from tax-exempt 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations, geocoded and filtered to focus on stewardship activities.
- STEW-MAP Surveys: Place-based surveys conducted in cities such as New York, Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Seattle, capturing localized stewardship efforts.
Each mapped location includes details such as:
- Organization Name
- Focus Area
- Address Information (Street, City, State, ZIP Code)
