Abstract
Abstract. Twelve forest fuels that varied widely in nitrogen content were burned in a thermogravimetric system, and nitrogen oxide production was analyzed by chemiluminescence. The effects of fuel nitrogen concentration, available oxygen, flow rate, and heating rate on nitrogen oxide production were examined.Results show that fuel nitrogen is an important source of nitrogen oxides from thelow-temperature (< looo
oC) burning of forest fuels. The production of nitrogen oxides increases with, and is highly dependent on, fuel nitrogen content. Fuel nitrogen is significant at the 1% level for the production of both NO and NO
x. Conversion of fuel-bound nitrogen to NO
x.can occur readily in oxygen-depleted air.
