Abstract

Red pine stands throughout the Lake States were sampled to determine the relation between site index and bole internode lengths. The total length of 5 internodes beginning at the first whorl above 8 feet is a good estimator of site index (average error 3.3 feet) for both plantations and natural stands throughout the Lake States.
