Abstract

In 1997, industrial roundwood output in North Carolina's forests totaled 870 million cubic feet, 5 percent more than in 1995. Mill byproducts generated from primary manufacturers increased 3 percent to 309 million cubic feet. Almost all plant residues were used primarily for fuel and fiber products. Saw logs were the leading round wood product at 423 million cubic feet; pulpwood ranked second at 355 million cubic feet; veneer logs third at 60 million cubic feet. The number of primary processing plants declined from 320 in 1995 to 280 in 1997. Total receipts increased 4 percent to almost 771 million cubic feet.
