Abstract

Large growth differences were found for hardwoods in shelterbelts on three contrasting soils of western Minnesota. Fiver years after planting, height growth was outstanding for green ash and Russian olive planted on a moderately fine-textured, somewhat poorly drained soil. Growth was much poorer on coarse-textured or shallow soils. Size of planting stock was not related to growth of trees after planting.
