Acidity of open and intercepted precipitation in forests

Abstract

Emissions of sulphur dioxide appear to have an acidifying effect on grossfall (open rainfall), throughfall, stemflow and soil solution at sites near major sources. Resulting effects on soil chemistry include elevated extractable acidity and aluminum and depressed exchangeable bases, especially calcium and magnesium. These changes are mostly in the incipient phases in the study area.
