Abstract

Results of the 2002 annual inventory of Indiana show 4.5 million acres of forest land. The oak-hickory type is the largest forest type on the landscape, making up over 46.5 percent of all forested land. Softwoods (or "conifers") comprise approximately 2.5 percent of Indiana''s forested acreage. Between 1998 and 1999-2002, the net volume of all live trees and salvable dead trees on timberland increased by 6 percent, from 7.9 billion cubic feet to 8.4 billion cubic feet.
