Abstract

Nonindustrial private landowners, who hold a majority of the Nation's commercial forests, own land primarily for reasons other than timber production. The multiple objective and dynamic nature of private ownership make planning and estimation of timber availability from this sector extremely difficult. Insight into the determinants of timber supply from private forests is provided through development of both theoretical and empirical models of harvest behavior. Tobit and probit models were used to analyze cross-sectional, and pooled time-series and cross-sectional data, respectively.
