Workshop on Functional Aspects of Regeneration of the Boreal Forest in the Context of Sustainable Forest Management

Abstract

The three review papers presented in this issue of the Canadian Journal of Forest Research follow a 1-day workshop that was held in Montreal in early January 1997 entitled Functional Aspects of Regeneration In the Boreal Forest in the Context of Sustainable Forest Management. This workshop was held as part of the regeneration working group of Canada's Sustainable Forest Management Network to foster integration and collaboration among scientists in the field of regeneration ecology in the boreal forest. Scientists from Canada, United States, and the Nordic countries attended this workshop. The presentations (15), covered a variety of topics dealing with the natural regeneration process and how a better understanding of the process could be used for managing boreal forests. At the end of the workshop, a group of scientists decided to produce review papers on the regeneration ecology of boreal tree species, mainly for North America, to provide a timely research-oriented synthesis on the subject. The synthesis is presented in this issue of the Canadian Journal of Forest Research.
