Abstract

The two building decay fungi, the European Merulius lacrymans Fr. and the native Poria incrassate (Berk. & Curt.) Burt., do not often become established in buildings. But when they do, these fungi can cause serious damage to structural timbers. In extreme cases they have advanced to the second and third floor of buildings. This is possible because of their special ability to conduct water from the soil to the point of attack.
