Abstract

Evidence suggests that eastern U.S. forests dominated by oak (Quercus spp.) and hickory (Carya spp.) may be shifting to more maple- (Acer spp.) and mixed-species dominated forests. Data from the U.S. Forest Service Forest Inventory and Analysis program were used to describe the status of oak and hickory regeneration in medium- and large-diameter stands that showed no evidence of artificial regeneration or harvesting since the previous survey (5 to 10 years).
