Abstract

The diameter growth of red spruce with 1/6, 1/3, and 1/2 crown removed was compared with that of unpruned trees for 18 growing seasons. Although removal of 1/6 of the live crown did not adversely affect annual radial growth, compared with that of the controls, removal of 1/3 and 1/2 had a significant effect on the cumulative radial growth for 2 and 9 growing seasons, respectively.
