Abstract

Camping is one of the fastest growing outdoor recreation activities in the United States. The role of public agencies in providing camping opportunities is outlined. A profile of socioeconomic characteristics of campers is discussed, together with some of the reasons why they camp. Management implications are offered for public-agency personnel, based upon current trends in the camping market and the decision about what kinds of campers should be attracted to public campgrounds.
