Tree communities of lowland warm-temperate old-growth and neighboring shelterbelt forests in the Shikoku region of southwestern Japan

Abstract

We characterized the tree species composition of a 30 ha old-growth and neighboring shelterbelt (reserved buffer strips among conifer plantations) in warm-temperate forests in the Shikoku region of southwestern Japan. Using a two-way indicator species analysis of data from 28 plots, we identified four structural groups in terms of relative basal area. These structural groups were interior and edge types of a greater than 30 ha old-growth, middle-sized (5- to 15-ha) shelterbelt type, and small-sized shelterbelt (less than 5 ha) type, respectively. Canonical correspondence analysis also showed differentiation of the four structural types along edge-interior gradient and remnant-size gradient.
