Abstract
Woodlots are significant features of the historic scene at Gettysburg National Military Park, Pennsylvania. Recent inventories of these historic woodlots indicated a general lack of seedling recruitment in the uneven-aged stands with a mature mixed oak overstory and a midstory of ash-cherry-dogwood-hickory. Seedling-sized stems of shrub and tree species were abundant, averaging over 40,000 per hectare. The tree species were dominated by ash and cherry, and many seedlings were browsed by white-tailed deer. April density of white-tailed deer increased from 0.25 white-tailed deer per hectare in 1987 to 0.40 white-tailed deer per hectare in 1992. A management strategy is needed to maintain the structure and species composition of the historic woodlots. We present an approach to develop methods for restoring and maintaining the historic woodlot scene.
