Abstract

In 9 years of study in Maine, the author developed a survey method for estimating populations of yellow-bellied sapsuckers (Sphyrapicus varius varius L.) and delineating their territories. The birds were attracted for study by tapping hardwood dowels to imitate noises the birds make in drumming and feeding.
