Abstract

A small population of Burrowing Owls (Speotyto cunicularia) is found in the San Francisco Bay Area, particularly in Santa Clara County. These owls utilize habitat that is dispersed throughout this heavily urbanized region. In an effort to establish a conservation plan for Burrowing Owls in Santa Clara County, a spatial analysis of owl distribution and habitat was performed using remote sensing and geographic information system (GIS) technologies. Land areas that could provide valuable habitat for owls in the future and that could link together groups of owls throughout the region, were identified.
