Abstract
The lessening dependence on public lands for the supply of timber and a shift in the focus of timber procurement from the western U.S. to the South and Midwest, coupled with the indications of increasing lumber production rates in the Midwest, may signal a significant opportunity for NIPF landowners in Illinois. The objective of this study is to determine the forest characteristics and spatial patterns of farmer-owned NIPF timberland for counties in Illinois in an effort to identify those areas in Illinois where farmers have the greatest opportunity to capitalize on existing NIPF acreage. The study is the first step in quantifying the opportunities for increased timber harvesting from this NIPF ownership group within Illinois. Counties located in western and southern Illinois may have the greatest potential for increased timber harvesting on farmer-owned NIPF based upon forest acreage, growing-stock volume, site classification, and forest tract size.
