Abstract

As forest managers shift their focus from stands to entire ecosystems alternative harvesting methods such as group selection are being used increasingly. Results of several field time and motion studies and simulation runs were incorporated into an expert system for estimating production rates and costs associated with harvests of group-selection units of various size by cable logging. This system also is useful for estimating production rates/costs for combinations of stand condition and unit size.
