Abstract

The author discusses some area and variance estimation methods that have been used by personnel of the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service Southern Research Station and its predecessors. The author also presents the methods of Horvitz and Thompson (1952), especially as they have been popularized by Stevens (1997), and shows how they could be used to produce estimates of variance on the fly from plots with static expansion factors. The author also extends the ideas of Horvitz and Thompson to the Forest Health Monitoring ozone grid.
