Exploring the association of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources' satellite-detected change with the Forest Inventory and Analysis system of observed removals and mortality

Abstract

Since 2001, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (MN-DNR) has mapped forest change annually by comparison of Landsat satellite image pairs. Over the same timeframe, 1,761 U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service, Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) plots in Minnesota have been remeasured on a 5-year cycle, providing field data on growth, removals, and mortality. This study compares estimates of change from these two sources. The FIA-based estimate of annual removals compares closely to the average MN-DNR estimate. FIA plots showing large removals were generally included in Landsat-detected change polygons, but image analysis usually failed to map as changed those plots exhibiting only partial removals or tree mortality.
