Abstract

Producing healthy hardwood cuttings for Populus plantation establishment requires attention to the management of clonal nurseries, timely collection of cuttings, adequate grading of cuttings, storage temperature and conditions, preplanting treatments, and planting operations. Recommended nursery practices are outlined, along with their grounding in such biological factors as stem anatomy, moisture content, induction of dormancy, availability of carbohydrate reserves, and freedom from insects and pests.
