Abstract

To the layperson (and sometimes even among professionals) there?s a perception that forests are about big, old trees. A century ago certainly the forests of the Lake States consisted of large acreages of stands of mature trees that were both old and big. And even though there are remnant stands present today, settlement, development, and harvesting have caused numerous changes in the forest.
